Welcome to November’s BSMS newsletter. This month we have information on a range of online talks students can sign up for, information on an ethical competition from the Uehiro Institute and advice from Propel on support for care-experienced students considering higher education.

Ella O’Flaherty – The cost of living crisis: how poverty impacts the health and well-being of Children

Inequality is growing in the UK. Despite supposedly being one of the richest countries in the world, 4.3 million children were found to be living in poverty in the United Kingdom in 2022/2023.

In November’s monthly lecture, Dr Ella O'Flaherty will look at the impact of poverty on children and why inequality matters, before exploring what we can do about it.

BSMS Admissions Talks

This November, we’re delivering a range of interactive workshops that will provide students with top tips for applications and interviews, as well as insights into medical student life and the NHS. The talks will start at 5pm and will be delivered online via Zoom.

Uehiro Oxford Institute - Practical Ethics and Responsibility competition 2025

The Uehiro Oxford Institute has launched this years Practical Ethics and Responsibility Competition for 2025. Open to students in Year 11, 12 or 13 it is an opportunity for teams of between three and five students to submit a video on an ethical problem and how you think responsibility is involved. 

The top four teams will be invited to a Schools Day in Oxford in March 2025 to participate in a debate and engage in ethical sessions run by Oxford academics.

Propel into Education opportunities for care-experienced students

Whether it's navigating the UCAS process, getting financial support, or accessing personalized guidance, we’ve got them covered with our upcoming programmes!

Uni Ready Programme

A series of six 1-to-1 online support sessions designed to help care-experienced young people prepare for university. These sessions will cover:

  • UCAS application guidance
  • Assistance with applying for Student Finance
  • Support in accessing the relevant support and networks for care-experienced students at university
  • And much more!

UCAS Goals Scheme

Through this scheme, care-experienced students can receive expert feedback on their Personal Statements from Propel’s network of professional volunteers. It’s a great way to make a statement stand out and increase the chances of success.

Webinar Series

We are launching our new webinar series called Navigating Higher Education: A Guide for Care-Experienced Students. This series will start on Wednesday, 30th October during National Care Leavers’ Week, offering guidance for your academic journey, funding options, and accessing ongoing support from your university and local authority.
